Cedar Key Museum State Park

The museum contains exhibits depicting Cedar Keys rich and varied history during the 19th century as a thriving port and its railroad connection. Located in the grounds is a house donated by Saint Clair Whitman which has been lovingly restored reflecting life in the 1920s. Other exhibits of note include a collection of sea shells and Indian artifacts also donated by the Whitman family.

    Cedar Key Historical Society Museum
Cedar Key Historical Society Museum

Formed in 1977 by a group of local residents The Cedar Key Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the rich history of Cedar Key and the surrounding area. The museum charts the town’s history through both the Seminole Indian and Civil Wars and covers the lumber and cedar pencil industries that flourished before a hurricane devastated the area on 23rd September 1896. The town never really recovered and was relocated to the neighbouring Way Key where the population earned a living from fishing the plentiful waters of the gulf. Opened in 2002 in the Andrews House, donated by the Andrews family, contains exhibits and equipment from The Standard Manufacturing Company that produced Donax whisk broom made of palm fiber from 1910 - 1952.

    Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge
Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1929, Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge contains significant natural and cultural resources from pre-historic and historic times. Today, the Refuge consists of 13 islands ranging in size from 1 to 120 acres, totaling 762 acres. Ancient Indian cultures once used these off-shore islands as living areas – a place of shelter and where food from the Gulf of Mexico was plentiful and readily available. In more recent history, the famous Faber Pencil Mill was located on Atsena Otie Key where it’s remains can be seen today.
