The Philadelphia Phillies history starts way back in 1883 when sporting goods manufacturer Al Reach and attorney John Rogers won an expansion franchise in the National League for Philadelphia, and the "Quakers" their name at that time became one of the "Classic Eight". They did not get off to the best start with a .173 winning percentage, which continues to be the worst in the clubs history.
The next year the club changed its name to the Philadelphias, perhaps in an effort to shake off the dismal start. The name was quickly shortened to Phillies by the press and interchanged with the old name the Quakers until 1890 when they officially became the Phillies.
The Phillies early history was unremarkable and they were hit badly when the American League started in 1901 and the club saw a number of its better players defect to the new league taking more lucrative contracts. Things did not start looking up for the team until 1943 when they were purchased by lumber baron William Cox. Things were not all good and Cox was banned from baseball for betting on his own team, and so the club got a new owner Bob Carpenter and he gave them a new name "Blue Jays", the name never took and was dropped by 1949. The following year the Phillies contested the World Series losing to the New York Yankees.
The team won the World Series in 1980, but it was not to be repeated until 2008 when they once again were crowned World Series winners. Along the way they achieved 8 East Divisional titles and 6 National League Pennants.
The Phillies moved into their new Spring Training home the Bright House Networks Field in 2004 after 48 years in Jack Russell Stadium. It was an instant hit with the fans, not only charming and comfortable but offering some of the best sight lines of any Spring Training facility.
