Formed as an expansion franchise in 1977 the Toronto blue jays were originally based in Exhibition Stadium until 1989 when they moved into the SkyDome. The SkyDome was renamed the Rogers Centre in 2004 when it was purchased by Rogers Communication.
The Blue Jays were one of two teams that joined the American League for the 1977 season, the other team being the Seattle Mariners. Originally owned by the brewery "Labatt's" the team got its name after a competition shortlisted the name "Blue Jays", and as the breweries main beer was "Labatt's Blue" the Toronto Blue Jays were born. The brewery had hoped that the team would be nicknamed the "blues", but the fans went with the "Jays" and the brewery lost out on a great marketing opportunity.
The Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992 when they beat the Atlanta Braves and their second one a year later. They are currently the only team based outside of the United States to have won the coveted World Series title, and after the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals) moved to Washington in 2004 they became the only Major League Baseball team to be based outside of the United States. In addition to their two World Series titles they have won two American League pennants and five East Division titles.
The 2009 Spring Training season marks the 25th year that The Blue Jays have called Dunedin home.
