The New York Yankees love them or hate them have to be one of the most successful sports franchises ever, with 26 World Series titles and 39 American League Pennants to their name.
The New York Yankees came into existence in early 1901 when the then minor American League declared itself a major league, placing new teams in Baltimore and Boston. Although New York was the preferred choice the New York Giants and the National League had enough power to stop a team coming to New York, and so the Yankees began life in 1901 in Baltimore playing as the Baltimore Orioles. In the middle of the 1902 season the then manager and part owner John McGraw jumped ship to the New York Giants and raided the team of its best players, the American League stepped in and took control of the team, negotiating a settlement that paved the way for the team to move to New York in 1903.
Their new home was in northern Manhattan at Hilltop Park and with their new home came a new name the New York Highlanders. During this time the team was also known as the New York Americana and New York Yankees, although it was not until 1913 that they became exclusively known as the New York Yankees. A look through the names of players who wore some of the Yankee's retired numbers and you find legends such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson to name but a few.
The Yankees Spring Training ground Steinbrenner Field is like a miniature Yankee Stadium, with a grandstand on two levels which comprises most of the 11,000 seating capacity and the outfield fences are the same dimension as those at Yankee Stadium in New York. Although this is one of the largest stadiums in the Grapefruit League the Yankees have been the leaders in total attendance since the move to Tampa in 1996, which can make it difficult to get tickets.
