    Lowry Park Zoo
Lowry Park Zoo

Haled as the number 1 family friendly zoo in the United States by Child Magazine, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo features 56 acres of lush natural habitats. The zoo is broken down into seven themed areas: Asian Domain, Primate World, Manatee and Aquatic Center, Florida Wildlife Center, Free-Flight Aviary, Wallaroo Station children’s zoo and the latest area Safari Africa. The zoo began life as a collection of indigenous animals located on the banks of the Hillsborough River in Plant Park in the late 1930’s. It was move to the more centrally located Lowry Park in 1957 by Mayor Nick Nuccio, but it was not until the arrival of Sheena, an 18-month-old Asian elephant in 1961 that the zoo began to expand. The zoo continued to grow through the 1970’s & early 1980’s until it underwent a major redevelopment reopening as the Lowry Park Zoo in March 1988. Today Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is the region’s only dedicated zoological garden, and is home to more than 1,800 animals not only from Florida but from all over the world.

    The Florida Aquarium
The Florida Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium is home to over 10,000 aquatic plants and animals, 1,340 different species from Florida and all over the world. The aquarium opened in March 1995 with a mission to entertain, educate and promote stewardship of our natural environment. Since that time more than six million visitors including 250,000 school children have visited the aquarium.  One highlight is the shark collection, and for those brave enough there is the chance to swim with these magnificent fish. See a rare leafy sea dragon from Australia and experience many more wonders of the sea.
