Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory
For those interested in what lives below the water’s surface, a visit to the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory will be a thrilling and educational day out. The 30,000 gallon marine aquarium is home to turtles, sea sponges, sharks and hundreds of other species. Unlike most big aquariums they focus on the smaller species like seahorses, hermit crabs and the endless living treasures of Florida’s coast.

Crooked River Lighthouse
Built in 1895 as a replacement for the lighthouse on Dog Island that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1873, the Crooked River Lighthouse is an impressive 103-foot iron and steel structure. It was decommissioned in 1995 by the U.S. Coast Guard who planned to auction it off to the highest bidder. A group of local residents got together and formed the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association with the goal of preserving, restoring, and opening the lighthouse to the public. Since then the 200 member strong, Association has worked with City officials to obtain the funding required for the restoration. Although not yet open to the public the lighthouse is worth visiting if only to admire it from beyond the security fence.
