The Baltimore Orioles were one of the American League's eight charter franchise clubs, originally based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and known as The Milwaukee Brewers. In 1902, the team moved to St. Louis, where it became the "Browns", in reference to the original name of the legendary 1880s club that by 1902 was known as the Cardinals. In 1951, Bill Veeck, the former owner of the Cleveland Indians purchased the Browns, and in 1954 he relocated them to Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.
The Orioles moved to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 1992, the first of the major league "retro" ballparks, which are more fan friendly than the concrete constructions they replaced.
Lovingly known as The O's or The Birds, the team won three World Series titles (1966, 1970, and 1983) and six American League pennants (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1979, 1983 This led to an unprecedented run of success from 1966 to 1983 which saw the Orioles become the envy of the league, and the winningest team in baseball.
In recent years they have struggled to find form on the field, while a high turnover in the front office has not helped. With the ascension of the Yankees and the Red Sox and the arrival in Washington of the Washington Nationals, it remains to see if they can recapture the glory years of the past.
The Orioles call Fort Lauderdale Stadium their home for spring training; although not one of the better stadium in the Grapefruit League it is steeped in history. Formerly the spring training home for the New York Yankee's during their glory years until 1996 when the Orioles took up residence.
