Originally the St. Louis Brown Stockings founded in 1882 the club were immediately successful winning four American Association pennants in a row between 1885 and 1888. Following these titles, they took part in an early version of the World Series, the first two against the Chicago White Stockings (Chicago Cubs), they won the 1886 series but the 1885 ended in dispute which was to set up a St. Louis / Chicago rivalry that continues to this day.
The Brown Stockings switched to the National League in 1892 when the American association went bankrupt. They changed their name to the Perfectoes in 1899 before settling on the name Cardinals a year later.
The team was in the wilderness, with little success until 1920 when things started to look up, they improved steadily through the 20's winning their first National League Pennant in 1926, going onto defeat New York Yankees four games to three in the World Series. The Yankees went returned the favor in 1928 World Series when the beat the Cardinals four games to zero.
The Cardinals moved into Busch Stadium, the third stadium to bare the Busch name in downtown St Louis in 2006. They became the only team other than the New York Yankees (1923) to have won the World Series in their inaugural season in a new ballpark.
The Cardinals have won 10 out of the 17 World Series they have contested and won 17 National League Pennants making them one of the more successful teams.
The Cardinals share Jupiter's Roger Dean stadium with the Florida Marlins, a $28 million Spring Training complex that was specifically designed to house two Major League ball teams. The state of the art stadium opened in February 1998, it has a capacity of 7,000 and is the newest of its kind in Florida. The seating is a mix of box seats, bleachers and skyboxes with an additional 300 on a party deck and in berm seating.
