The Minnesota Twins began life as the Washington Senators in 1901 as one of the founder members of the American League. The changed their name in 1905 to the Washington Nationals, then back to the Washington Senators in the late 1950's.
The team started out on a losing streak and it was not until 1911 that they began to find their winning form. They were one of the most successful major league teams over a 22 year period winning three American League Pennants and their first World Series Title in 1924. They have gone onto win a further three American League Pennants and two World Series Titles in 1987 & 1991.
Twin Cities Twins was originally proposed for the teams name after the move to Minneapolis in an effort not to alienate the fans who live in the neighboring city of St. Paul. The NBA's Minneapolis Lakers were forced to relocate to Los Angeles due to poor attendances, partly due to the reluctance of fans from St. Paul to support the team. The name was rejected and a new name was chosen in a move that was unprecedented in American professional sport, they named the team after the state, the Minnesota Twins. The team continues to use the Twin Cities TC logo on their caps today.
The Minnesota Twins have used Hammond Stadium in the Lee County Sports Complex, Ft. Myers as their Spring Training base since 1990. Built in 1991 the stadium has a capacity of 7,500 and is one of three Spring Training facilities in Ft Myers, although Terry Park Ballfield is not currently in use.
