The Boston Red Sox, based in Boston, Massachusetts and are also known as the Old Town Team, The Bosox and are often familiarly referred to by newspapers and fans as simply The Sox. Members of the American League East Division; their home field is Fenway Park, the oldest major league ballpark still in operation, which opened in April 1912. The Red Sox won the inaugural World Series as the Boston Americans in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates and won their most recent World Series championship in 2007, taking the total of World Series wins to seven. The Red Sox have one of the longest standing and most storied rivalries in North American sports with the nearby New York Yankees. The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry has centred on the supposed Curse of the Bambino, and has gained even more significance with the creation of the Wild Card in 1995, which allowed the two teams to meet in the playoffs.
Although the Red Sox's have a lease with Fort Myers that lasts through to 2109, they have an early opt out that would allow them to leave after the 2009 spring training season. The most likely destination would be Sarasota after the Cincinnati Reds move to Arizona and the Cactus League. In an effort to keep the Red Sox in Fort Myers the local press lead a campaign to remind the Sox of the "Sarasota Curse", a reminder that during the thirteen years they held their spring training in Sarasota they never won a World Series.
Sarasota does not have a good record when it comes to World Series championship teams; every team that has based its spring training in Sarasota has suffered a downturn, while Fort Myers has been the spring home of five World Series winning teams, more than any other city that hosts spring training in either the Grapefruit or Cactus Leagues.
