The Cincinnati Reds can trace their roots back to the Original Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first openly all-professional team that was founded in 1863. They turned fully professional in 1869 before going on an incredible 130 game winning streak, finally being defeated by the Brooklyn Atlantics, baseballs first dynasty.
The original Red Stockings relocated to Boston after the 1870 season and a new Cincinnati Red Stockings team was formed, becoming founder members of the National League in 1876 where they stayed until 1880 when they were expelled from the league, partly for selling bear to fans during their games.
The third incarnation of the Cincinnati Red Stockings became a founder member of the American Association in 1882 where they stayed until November 1889 when they left with the Brooklyn Dodgers to join the National League, dropping the word Stockings from their name and becoming the Cincinnati Reds.
In 1970 the team moved to the Riverfront Stadium and the team went on another run winning 70 out of their first 100 games and the legend of "The Big Red Machine" was born. The Cincinnati Reds have had their share of glory winning five World Series titles, two of which were back to back in 1975 and 1976 when "The Big Red Machine" looked unstoppable. Their latest title came in 1990 with a 4 - 0 whitewash over the Oakland Athletics the 1989 World Series Champions.
The 2009 season will be the last one for the Cincinnati Reds at Ed Smith Stadium and the Grapefruit League as from 2010 they will be moving to Goodyear, Arizona to play in the rival Cactus League.
