The only attraction in the world that combines the romantic tale of a princess and her prince with the glitz and glamour of Broadway, the adventure of the Wild West and the excitement of Ancient Rome – Arabian Nights.
Staged in a 140,000 sq. ft. dinner attraction designed with Moorish-themed architecture is the world’s largest indoor climate-controlled equestrian arena, this mesmerizing year-round production is an oasis in the midst of animatronics and theme parks.
Arabian Nights features 60 horse stars and 30 dazzling performers. The multi-breed cast of horses wears costumes and even gets makeup. Some play up to four character roles per show, while others perform without riders. The cast includes top talent from stage, circus and equine disciplines from around the world.
Voted Orlando’s No. 1 dinner attraction, Arabian Nights has performed more than 6,000 consecutive shows and entertained millions of guests since opening its doors in 1988.
Of all the famous animal characters in history, from the literary giant Moby Dick to canine TV-star Lassie, only the Black Stallion has appeared in a literary work, a motion picture and, thanks to Arabian Nights, a live production.
The gift of the Black Stallion to Arabian Nights by Walter Farley, the late author of the best-selling Black Stallion book series, set in motion a living chapter of this fabled horse hero. Called “the most famous fictional horse of the century” by the New York Times, the Black Stallion is the hero of more than 100 million books sold in 21 languages worldwide and is immortalized on film, viewed by one billion.
“I think as long as this show is running, my father’s ideas will still be alive,” says Alice Farley, daughter of Walter Farley. “The Black Stallion liberty act is true to the spirit of my father’s books. It celebrates the mysterious beauty and power of the free horse.”
During more than 6,000 consecutive performances, the living embodiment of Walter Farley’s horse hero has reared toward the skies and performed to music “at liberty” (no rider). The stallion also rescues a princess who climbs aboard the stallion’s bare back – without using a saddle or bridle – and speeds around equestrian arena.
“I know that Walter trusted me to know how to present what he had always presented the Arabian horse to be,” said Mark Miller, Arabian Nights’ owner who has known the Farley family since birth.
Three of Arabian Nights’ horses play the role of the Black Stallion – “Magic,” “Dark Storm” and “Samson.” In addition to performing in shows at Arabian Nights, the Black Stallion performers have previously appeared on NBC’s Today Show, Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, the National Horse Show in New York City’s Madison Square Garden and Equitana in Lexington, Ky.
Another young black stallion, “Chance,” is being trained to eventually step into the role. “The amount of ground work that goes into training these horses is impressive,” Miller said. “If you can put one of these horses solidly in a show in less than two years, you are doing an incredible job.”
Of the 20 different acts in the Arabian Nights production, the Black Stallion is consistently ranked a favorite by both children and adults.
In remembrance of Farley’s legacy, Arabian Nights and Tim Farley, the son of Walter, established the Black Stallion Literacy Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing literacy proactively for first and fourth grade students. The BSLP motivates children toward successful lives by helping them discover the joys of reading and wonders of learning through the magic of live horses and the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. In its first three years, the program reached more than 70,000 children in 12 states.
“We treat the Black Stallion with the ultimate respect that he has earned over the years,” Miller said. “More than any other story ever told, or any other movie ever made, the Black Stallion books explain how important horses are to people.”
