THE WORLD’S FIRST COMMERCIAL AIRLINER…
The St Petersburg Museum of History is a great starting point for those wishing to find out more about this area. There is a permanent interactive exhibition of St Petersburg’s history and in the museum’s Benoist Pavilion, a replica of the world’s first commercial airliner which made the first scheduled commercial flight from St Petersburg to Tampa on 1 January, 1914.
ART FOR ALL TASTES…
For outstanding examples of world art the Museum of Fine Arts has a comprehensive collection of art - including European, American, Columbian and Asian - as well as Greek and Roman antiquities all in a beautiful elegant setting. In downtown St Petersburg, situated on the Bayboro Harbor, is the Salvador Dali Museum. Here you will find the world’s most comprehensive collection of Dali’s work, including original oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics and sculptures.
A REMINDER OF THE 1960s AND EARLIER…
The Florida International Museum contains both national and international exhibits - in the Kennedy Galleries there are personal items of the Kennedy family and there is also a Jackie Kennedy gallery. The other permanent exhibit is The Cuban Missile Crisis exhibit which gives an insight into the culture of the area through the use of film and music. There are also period living rooms, a kitchen and a1962 schoolroom as well as a full size fallout shelter and a Soviet built SA-2 missile - truly a step back in time. If you are interested in earlier American history, go to Heritage Village - here there is a historical museum and a 21 acre village containing 22 historic structures. There are living history interpreters, giving you an idea of what everyday life on an early Florida homestead was like.
CYCLING, WILD DOLPHINS AND SUGAR WHITE BEACHES…
Those visitors seeking outdoor activities will certainly not be disappointed - for keen bikers the Pinellas Trail is a 34 mile paved path that follows an old railroad bed from St Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. Shell Island is a barrier island with a gentle swimming beach and as its name suggests has lots of shells! Egmont Key is home to a wildlife refuge, a historic lighthouse and fort ruins - you can spend the day on the beach swimming, walking or looking for wildlife. There are also snorkeling cruises where you will be able to spot wild dolphins. For a taste of real luxury, the Don Cesar Beach Resort in St Petersburg is the place to go. Famous for its sugar white beach, it was a playground for the rich and famous in the 1920s. Today it is renowned for its fine dining and activities such as fishing, tennis and golf.
ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL THE FAMILY…
Pier 60 at Clearwater Beach is a fabulous place where all the family can have fun. There are giant inflatable slides, bungee-harness rides and a huge playground and every evening, a sunset celebration with live entertainment. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick or injured animals and residents include Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, sea-turtle, brown pelicans and opossums.
SAMPLE A TASTE OF GREECE…
The highest percentage of Greek residents in the United States can be found at Tarpon Springs and here you can enjoy outstanding Greek food, visit the sponge docks, shop for authentic Greek products or take a cultural boat tour. The Tarpon Springs Aquarium is a 120000 gallon reef tank which is home to more than 30 species of fish, including stingray, tarpon and a goliath grouper weighing nearly 200 pounds. There are live feeding shows 4 times a day and there is an entire wing dedicated to ‘hands on’ educational experiences where visitors can safely pet and feed a variety of species.
