26 MILES OF BRILLIANT WHITE SANDS…
The Beaches of South Walton area consists of thirteen beach towns peppered along a 26 mile stretch of coastline, famous for its brilliant white sands and emerald green sea. Here you can see loggerhead sea turtles, deer and fox and endangered species such as the gopher tortoise.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS…
The town of Seaside first started to be developed in 1981 and it featured in the 1997 movie, ‘The Truman Show’. This is a friendly town, perfect for pedestrians and featuring Victorian style buildings surrounded by picket fencing. You can experience the best of both worlds here as there is not only easy access to the beach but also plenty of good restaurants, art galleries and markets.
SAND MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS…
Grayton Beach is the State’s oldest beach town and Grayton Beach State Park was named as America’s best beach area by Stephen Leatherman, the coastal geomorphologist, in 1994. In Deer Lake State Park the sand mountains and valleys will take your breath away while in Topsail Hill Preserve State Park there is a towering dune which has to be seen to be believed.
SPORTS, ART AND CULTURE - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE…
For those more interested in sporting activities, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort has lots to offer. The marina has a rental fleet and there are sailing classes for youngsters here. There are also tennis courts and 4 championship golf courses, a vast selection of shopping centers and restaurants. Water sports lovers will want to go to Choctawatchee Bay where there is angling, kayaking and jet skiing - this is also a popular spot for bird watching. The new village of Baytowne Warf overlooks the bay and here there are restaurants, specialty shops and nightclubs, making this a destination which has something for everyone. Seagrove Beach is another good canoeing and kayaking location and it also has art galleries and antique stores - again a great place offering many varied activities.
BLOOMING GARDENS AND A CHANCE TO COOL OFF…
Eden Gardens State Park is inland and its centerpiece is a neo-classic plantation style manor, the gardens of which positively overflow with camelia and azalea blooms in spring. For those who want to be at one with nature, Point Washington State Forest has 10 miles of trails through its 15000 acres. If you want to cool off, Ponce De Leon Springs State Park has a springs - climatized swimming hole and beautiful oak trees with plenty of shade.
WONDERFUL VICTORIAN ARCHITECTURE…
For a real ‘step back in time’, go to DeFuniak Springs where the elaborate turrets, verandas and columns on the buildings will make you think you have entered the world of the Victorian era - there are, in fact, more than 150 buildings listed on the National Historic Register. The oldest library in Florida is here - The Walton DeFunick Library - its collection of weaponry is priceless, some of it dating back to the Crusades. Another beautifully renovated building is the Murray Theater - well worth a visit. For wine lovers there are free tours and wine tasting in the Chautauqua Winery - Florida’s largest winery. An interesting building is the Hotel DeFuniak which was founded in 1880 and chosen as a winter home for the New York Chautauqua - a cultural, educational and religious organization. The Chautauqua season continues to be celebrated in the present day and begins in February with the Chautauqua Assembly, finishing in late April with the Chautauqua Festival.
